Show Goat Feeding Schedule: A Practical Framework
There isn't one universal feeding schedule that works for every show goat. Breed, age, current condition, feed type, and days remaining until the show all change the answer. This is a framework for building your own schedule -- not a substitute for your advisor, breeder, or vet's specific recommendations for your animal.
Start with a routine, not a recipe
Before worrying about exact amounts, get the basics locked in: feed at the same times every day, keep portions consistent, and make sure fresh water is available at all times. Goats are creatures of habit, and a lot of feeding problems trace back to an inconsistent routine rather than the wrong ration.
Work backward from show day
Once you know your animal's current weight, target weight, and days remaining, you can figure out the average daily gain (ADG) you need to hit that target -- which tells you whether you need to increase, hold, or ease off the ration. Our Target Weight Calculator does this math for you.
Make changes gradually
Sudden changes in feed type or amount are one of the most common causes of digestive upset in goats. If a ration needs to change -- more feed, less feed, a different product -- phase it in over several days rather than all at once.
Track what actually happens
A schedule is only useful if you know whether it's working. Log what's fed and how much, and weigh regularly so you can see the actual trend, not just what was planned. If the ration says one thing and the scale says another, the scale wins -- adjust from there.
When to bring in your advisor or a vet
Weight not tracking toward target after a couple of weeks, a sudden drop in appetite, loose stool, or any other change in behavior are all reasons to loop in your advisor or a vet rather than adjusting the ration on your own. Feeding problems are usually easier to fix early.
